Slow Cooker delight

The Artist of Disappearance by Anita Desai is a lovely little treasure of short stories.  Beautifully written, you will zip right through them.

I don't know about all of you folks out there, but I love my slow cooker.  It can do wonders on a cold, busy night.  This is one of my favorites.  I know Sauerbraten might not be for everyone, but I LOVE it!
 Sauerbraten
Ingredients:
1 3 lb. rump roast
1 1/2 cups sliced onion
1 cup water
1 cup white vinegar
2 T salt
2 t.sugar
1 lemon, sliced
10 whole cloves
6 peppercorns
3 bay leaves
15 gingersnaps, crumbled (such as Nabisco)

1. Trim fat from roast, cut in1/2 and place in a bowl. Combine the rest of the ingredients and pour over meat.  Cover and marinate in fridge 24-36 hours.

2. Remove roast (reserving 1 1/2 cups marinade) Place in slow cooker.  Pour reserved marinade over meat and cook on hi for 1 hour.  Then reduce heat to low and cook 7 to 8 hours.
