Annabel by Katherine Winters is similar to Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides in that it is about the difficult life of hermaphrodite.  This story is sad and tender.  The forbidding landscape of rural Canada contributes to the characters' isolation.

I hate to throw away food.  I had bought a container of buttermilk to make the blueberry buttermilk cake a week ago, and then I used it for the fried ravioli, but I still had a cup left.  Since the kids had no school today I thought: buttermilk pancakes!  I found this recipe in my New York Times Cookbook and I added pecans and miniature chocolate chips.  It was fabulous:

Buttermilk Pancakes:

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 T butter, melted

1. Sift together flour, salt and baking soda.
2. Combine buttermilk, egg and melted butter
3. Stir together wet and dry-do not beat.  Drop batter by spoonful onto hot griddle.  Flip when bubbles appear.
